“I Have You by My Side” is a song that has quietly traveled through time.

The lyrics were written many years ago by Stuart Murray, first imagined as part of a teenage play called Pinesap — a story about two young souls, Pinesap and Juniper, who find love despite uncertainty and outside pressures. At its core, the message was simple yet powerful: even when the future is unclear, being together is enough.

In its earliest form, the song also carried a deeper message — standing against bullying and the forces that try to pull people apart. 

Over time, as the song evolved, that message softened into something more universal: love, support, and simply having someone by your side.

Over the years, Stuart carried this song with him. It evolved through different chapters of his life — performed in the 1980s with his band The Buzzard Brothers, and later adapted into a musical he wrote decades later. Yet, through every version, the heart of the song remained unchanged.

When Stuart shared these lyrics with me, it was more than just a song — it was a story waiting to be heard again.

Stuart’s original words stayed true to their essence, while I gave the music to bring emotion, depth, and a fresh sound to his vision.
